Asian Paints Apcolite

Showcasing new paint features in a unique and engaging manner

About

Asian Paints, a large Indian paint manufacturer, wanted a unique way to showcase the features and benefits of AP Apcolite All Protek, their line of indoor water based wall paints. These benefits included:

Flame Spread Resistance

Advanced Stain Guard

“Lotus Effect” - a feature that ensures water beads and falls off, similar to the finish on lotus leaves.

A unique fragrance that reduces the dreaded “paint smell”.

While Asian Paints had a number of experience centers aimed at home owners, they wanted a way to showcase these benefits at dealerships and paint and hardware stores. Since they would have a much smaller space to work with, and little control over the overall look and feel of the store, they wanted an innovative, interactive, point-of-purchase unit that would stand out, while communicating the features of the Apcolite All Protek brand.

Working with the team at Aspect Design, I designed a range of options, working with the client from initial sketches, through to technical drawings and graphics.

Initial Designs

Route 1

The first route included a set of 4 miniature paint cans, with an icon of one of the features. Lifting up one of the mini paint cans plays a short video explaining the technology behind, and the benefits of, that feature.

The screen could also be used to showcase the entire range, as well as select color schemes.

This route was also adapted to a wall-mount version, where the cans were replaced with large buttons. A metallic finish and glowing edge make the entire unit stand out in the store.

Route 2

The second route consisted of a set of 4 rotating wheels that explain the product features and benefits to the customer.

An alternate version had the wheels replaces with reels, and the wooden finish replaced with glossy acrylic.

Route 3

The third route consisted on a miniature diorama style display, representing a room within the home. Product features and benefits are listed below on backlit panels.

The panels light up one after the after, showcasing one benefit at a time, while the color of the unit changes to match. The light colors are chosen to match the graphics used.

Final Design

Route 1 & 3 were selected by the client, with some changes:

For both options, an air freshener was included, that would operate when a customer interacts with the unit.

The units were re-designed to be more compact, while still retaining space for all the components.

Route 1

Option A was redesigned with a vertical screen

Option B was redesigned to integrate the air freshener.

Both of the new designs could work on both a tabletop and mounted on a wall.

Route 3

The unit was redesigned to include buttons for interactions.

A screen was also added to compliment the graphics on the back panel.
